DIRT FLIES ON LONG-AWAITED $5.2 MIL WATER PROJECT

Workers lay the pipe along Sassafras Ridge road

Dirt is flying for Calhoun's long-awaited $5.2 million, 21-mile water extension to southern Calhoun, Sand Ridge, and Sassafras Ridge to Russett.

Mt. Zion PSD Board member Roscoe Gainer was at the construction site today, obviously happy that the bogged-down project has started.

Gainer, a resident of water-starved Sassafras Ridge, appeared at a public meeting held by the Calhoun Commission one year ago as a concerned citizen.

After hearing the multitude of problems and delays, he said, "It's time to dig ditch."

Gainer was then appointed to the PSD board.

Waterline project to be completed mid-2011

Bruce Allen Pipeline began construction on the project this week at the Russett end of Sassafras Ridge, laying water pipe in the rural road's ditch-line.

The awarding of the bid to Allen is still the object of a civil suit.

The project is expected to be completed in 2011.
