A Spencer area man Russell Kreig has been identified as the victim of a beating in downtown Spencer.

Ptl. J. C. Westfall of the Spencer Police Department said Kreig was severely beaten early Sunday morning in front of the Malibu Bar in downtown Spencer. Two men have been charged with malicious assault.

Police arrested Gary Lee Fluharty, 37, and Carlton Edward Tawney, 30, both of Spencer, following what a criminal complaint says was a brutal attack on the man in front of the bar.

Both Fluharty and Tawney are in Central Regional Jail on $10,000 bond.

Kreig was taken to Roane General Hospital for treatment, after which he signed himself out, say authorities.

Ptl. Westfall said when he arrived at the scene, a witness who was attempting to help the victim, said "Tawney pushed her back and told her to watch this," says the complaint.

Police say the two assailants proceeded to stomp and beat the victim unconscious.

The female intervenor told police she and her brother-in-law tried to give the victim aid, and Tawney told her to leave him alone and "let him die there," says the complaint.

Ptl. Westfall said the man received multiple injuries to his face, forehead, eyes, broken teeth and bruising to his body, and was sent for treatment of the trauma.

The complaint says bar owner Gilbert Bolduc opened the door of the bar to see what was happening and Tawney struck him in the head, and told him, "Get back inside you s-o-b."

Elizabeth Ann Gray, 24, Fluharty's girlfriend, was also charged in the incident for being an accessory. She is being held in Central Regional Jail on $5,000 bond.
