Loyd "Virgil" Batten, 93 - Elizabeth

Loyd "Virgil" Batten, 93, of Elizabeth, West Virginia, passed away Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Roane County, the son of the late Holly Benton and Myrtle Nichols Batten. He was a member of the Laborers Union Local # 1085 of Parkersburg, W.Va. He was a retired truck driver with the W.Va. Department of Highways. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII, Headquarters CO. 11th Corps, under General MacArthur. He participated in the liberation of Luzon and was part of the occupational forces in Japan. Last year he flew to Washington, D.C. with the Honor Flight to visit the WWII Memorial.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marjorie Daugherty Batten; four sons, Larry Batten of Palestine, Gary (Mabel) Batten of Belleville, David (Linda) Batten of Elizabeth and Paul (Nicki) Batten of Elizabeth; two daughters, Gloria (Joseph) Dupont of Billerica, Mass., and Brenda (Kenneth) Cooper of Parkersburg; sister, Audra Metz of Chippewa Lake, Ohio; 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Loyal and Gerald Batten; a sister, Mildred Mayne; a granddaughter, Lauren Batten; a great-granddaughter, Jayleigh Stanley. Memorial services will be held Friday 2 p.m. at Matheny Whited Funeral Home of Elizabeth with the Rev. Danny McVey officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to the service on Friday.
