"Come Home To An Old Friend"

The 48th annual Calhoun County Wood Festival is this week in Grantsville.

Festivities officially begin today with booths opening at noon. Gospel music starts at 5 p.m. on the Main Street stage, including performances by David Weaver, Chelsea Hicks, and Brenda & Glen McBride. The coronation of Mr. and Miss Woodchuck and the introduction of Wood Festival royalty is planned for 7:30 p.m. Mike Morningstar and Rick Roberts will perform at 9 p.m.

"Rukus" the mechanical bull, a new addition to the festival will be on Main Street Thursday through Saturday.

"No One You Know" Bluegrass Band

Booths will open at 10 a.m. on Friday. Main Street stage entertainment will begin 5 p.m. with Harry Beall and Friends; at 6:15 Calhoun County legend, Lester McCumbers will play; and at 7 p.m. the award winning bluegrass band "No One You Know" sponsored by Houchin Construction will play. At 9 p.m. Minnie Hamilton Health System presents "The Will Freed Band".

Something new this year is the Wood Festival ATV & Garden Tractor Pulls on Wayne Underwood Field on Friday. Registration begins at 5 p.m., competition begins at 7 p.m. "under the lights".

Registration is $10 per class entry and general admission to the event is $3 per person. The event is sponsored by Ullum Oil and Gas, Heiney and Son and Houchin Rental, Fabric & Laundromat and the Grantsville Cubs. Saturday's events begin with the Wood Festival 5K Walk-Run at 8 a.m. and the Kids Run beginning immediately after. Kids Day activities start at 9:30 a.m. in front of the Courthouse sponsored by Loren B. Howley, Attorney. Booths will open at 10 a.m.

Grand Parade 2009

This is another exciting year for the Wood Festival Mud Bog Point Series Race at the Calhoun Industrial Park, located one mile East of Grantsville on Rt. 5. Registration starts at 9 a.m. with competition starting at 1 p.m. The event is sponsored by Heiney and Son; J. Saturday's Main Street stage performances include, Stoker 7 Calhoun born alternative rock at noon; the WV Bluegrass Alliance at 1 p.m.; High Mountain Bluegrass sponsored by Cain Oil & Gas at 3 p.m.; The Smith Family Singers, contemporary gospel, sponsored by Holberts Store at 4:15; The McCormicks at 5:15 p.m.; "Plan B" will perform with music from yesterday and today sponsored by Rogers and Son Oil and Gas at 6:30; Calhoun Wood Festival Sweepstakes Drawings (need not be present to win) will be held at 8 p.m.; The Traders Guide presents Dangerfield with Roger and David Bush, Harry Beall, Rick Poling and Lyle Kerby at 8:30.

If you are an old Calhoun High School choir member you will especially enjoy a tribute to the musical influence and the memory of Joe Wilt (pictured left). Plans are being made to perform the "Battle Hymn" at the start of the Calhoun Banks Fireworks display at 11 p.m. followed by "The Lord Bless You and Keep you" to conclude the Festival.
