Roy L. Plant, 84 - Parkersburg

Roy L. Plant, 84, of Parkersburg, West Virginia, passed away April 17, 2010, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Calhoun County, W.Va., the son of the late Roscoe and Georgia Kelley Plant.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and had retired from Walker Parkersburg after many years of service. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping in the hills of West Virginia. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed sharing his harvests with family and friends. He was a longtime member of Camden Avenue Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Gazel B. Hupp Plant of Parkersburg; his children, Doris Ann Newberry of Abingdon, Va., and Larry Wayne Plant (Janet) of Parkersburg; his grandchildren, Michael Wayne Newberry (Tamara) of Redlion, Pa., Melissa Ann Sawyer (Tony) of York, Pa., Carla Ann Griffith (John) of Abingdon, Va., M. Sean Plant (Kathy) of Parkersburg and Nicholas Wayne Plant of Parkersburg; his brothers, Robert Plant and James Plant, both of Grantsville; his sisters, Sharon Chadock of Cambridge, Ohio, and Carolyn Shaffer of Grantsville; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Hazel Staul, Dorotha Siers and Elizabeth Shaffer; and his son-in-law, Kenneth Lee Newberry.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Camden Avenue Church of Christ with Evangelist Dana Slingluff officiating. Entombment will be in Sunset Memory Gardens Mausoleum with full military rites by Parkersburg American Legion Post 15. Visitation will be today from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, and at the church one hour prior to the service Tuesday.
