MON NATIONAL FOREST GETS SOME NEW LAND

(04/13/2010)
448-acres of land near the historic Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike near Bartow has been added to the Monongahela National Forest.

The Trust for Public Land made the announcement Monday.

The land is on a bluff overlooking the Deer Creek Valley.

It was bought with $900,000 from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund.

The land was purchased last year by the Trust for Public Land, with the intention of transferring it to the U.S. Forest Service.

The Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike was a heavily traveled road over the Allegheny Mountains prior to and during the Civil War.

It continues to the west along Rt. 47 in Ritchie, Wirt and Wood Counties.
