Calhoun-Gilmer Career Center

The Calhoun-Gilmer Career Center chapter of SkillsUSA had twenty-one students participate in the annual West Virginia SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills competitions, March 19-20. The event was held at the Academy of Careers and Technology in Beckley, WV. With over 500 students competing in 36 different contests, this was one of the largest groups of students the career center has had to participate in this annual event.

Calhoun-Gilmer Career Center is pleased to announce three Gold Medal 1st Place winners. Zechariah Cosner, a Gilmer County Post Grad student in the Welding Technology program placed first in the Welding competition.

Mark Bedree, a Calhoun County Middle-High School student in the Networking Technologies program placed first in the Job Skills Demonstration "A" competition.

John McCormick a post grad student in the Networking Technologies program placed first in the Technical Computer Applications competition.

These three students have qualified to compete in the National SkillsUSA competition in Kansas City, Mo., June 20-25, 2010.

Bryan Sterns, Director of the Calhoun-Gilmer Career Center, says "The opportunity for our students to participate in a state competition is important not only to compete for Gold medals, but for the experience the students acquire in participating with other career and technical students. I am extremely proud of our students and staff and the way they conducted themselves at the state SkillsUSA competition." "We would like to thank Gear Up, Anita Roberts and JoLynn Wilson for there assistance in helping provide the way for these students to attend," Sterns said.

Other students attending as competitors and observers were Gilmer County High School students, Charles Riffle, Yumus Roberson, Matthew Cottrill, Charles Self, Camden Kinder, Janie Parker, Samuel Dennison, Wayne Roberts and Jason Wagner; Calhoun County Middle-High School students, Zachary Hanshaw, Tracy King, Courtney Honaker, Judi Greathouse, Graham Knight, George Short, Calvin Knotts and Zack Bawcum; and post graduate, Avery Benson.
