A federal court has found a Clay County man and his son guilty of stealing heavy equipment valued at $300,000.

Tommy Edward Young, Sr., 43, and Tommy Edward Young, Jr., 23, of Ovapa, an area coined "Murder Mountain," had been indicted on federal charges last year.

The indictment alleges the men had been involved in stealing equipment across state lines, Ohio, New York and Pennsylvania to Clay, Roane, Kanawha and Jackson County.

Equipment stolen from Calhoun belonging to murder victims Mike and Julie Flanagan was discovered on Murder Mountain.

During the four-day trial, an Ohio contractor testified that his stolen equipment had a GPS device which was spotted in the remote woods near the Young residence, while helicopter fly-overs spotted other equipment.

The Times Record-Roane County Reporter said Tommy Young, Jr. was indicated in Roane County last year for stealing a dump truck and trailer and bulldozer from a logging site.

The Youngs were in the crossfire of what was reported to be several thousand rounds of shots fired on Murder Mountain several years ago, variously described as a family feud associated with drug dealing.

Young's brother-in-law Richard Cummings was connected to a murder incident in Roane County, the death of Judson Reid, whose body was taken from Tariff and dumped on a mountain above the Town of Clay.
