Burwell won a "cheer-off" over three other finalists held over the weekend.

Burwell previously served as the Mountaineer alternate. He filled in for current Mountaineer, Rebecca Durst, earlier in the basketball season.

Burwell is a senior majoring in multidisciplinary studies. He replaces Durst, a resident of Point Pleasant. Durst was the second female mascot in the university's history.
