CALHOUN COMMISSION SEEKING GRANTS FOR COUNTY GROUPS - Fire Departments, EMS, Parks And Hospital

(02/10/2010)
The Calhoun Commission is applying for grant money for a number of projects, all approved at Monday's commission meeting.

This round of small grant applications is through the Governor's Community Partnership Grant Program.

The Upper West Fork Volunteer Fire Department will be receiving a new fire truck sometime next year that needs equipment. The items that have been prioritized are hoses, nozzles and fittings.

The commission has applied for $2,500 for the equipment.

The commission's executive secretary Danielle Stevens says the commission will be exploring other grant opportunities to support community projects.

The Upper West Fork Community Park is currently in the process of installing equipment to improve the quality of recreation at the park.

The park wants to install camping grills, a Geo-Dome Climber in the playground area, and benches around the walking trail. The walking trail was an earlier project of the Calhoun Commission. A grant application of $2,500 has been submitted.

The Arnoldsburg Volunteer Fire Department is seeking a $2,500 grant to help replace the windows and floor covering on the top floor of the fire station, replacing that which was installed when the building was constructed in 1986.

A grant application for $1,605 was issued for Calhoun County EMS to be applied toward the purchase of suction machines, a cot and a new light bar.

The 34 volunteer fire fighters on the Grantsville Volunteer Fire Department currently have 24 Personal Alert Safety System Devices, which is not enough for each volunteer.

The PASS devices are used as an accountability system that is required by the state - personal locater system should a firefighter be in trouble during an emergency. The grant application is for $2,500.

The Calhoun County Park board is working on several projects to improve the overall appearance and usage of the park.

A current project is adding siding to one side of the Herbert Smith Building, a section that has no siding with bare blocks and exposed eaves.

The commission is seeking grant money in the amount of $2,500 to help complete the project.

The commission is seeking a $10,000 grant to improve the main entrance to Minnie Hamilton Health Care System. While new doors have been installed, the work on the doors is not complete.

Minnie Hamilton is looking at the possibility of expanding the opening at the main entrance to make for better patient flow in and out of the building.

The commission approved a $15,000 grant received by the Calhoun Historical Society, and is seeking a Courthouse Security Grant for improvements to the entrances to the courthouse.

Stevens says efforts are continuing to obtain grant funding for a handicap lift for the courthouse, and a public hearing required for the grant is being scheduled.
