GROGG PLACED ON HOME CONFINEMENT FOLLOWING POLICE CHASE

A Calhoun man has been placed on home confinement following felony charges brought against him linked to a Roane County police chase in 2008.

Michael Lee Grogg, 25, of Millstone was arrested after a chase that included three collisions with two police cruisers, and was charged with malicious wounding, among other charges.

Grogg was tried last year in circuit court, and a jury found him not guilty.

Grogg has now plead guilty to lesser crimes, entering pleas in a Roane magistrate court.

He entered pleas to charges of fleeing in a vehicle, reckless driving, driving while his license was revoked for DUI, and improper backing, in exchange for dismissal of charges DUI-2nd, obstructing an officer, driving too fast for road conditions, driving left of center and failure to stop.

Magistrate Russell Goodwin ordered Grogg to pay fines, court costs and restitution totaling $2,703 and sentenced him to one year home confinement.

He was given credit for 120 days already spent in jail.

Members of the Spencer Police Dept. attempted to stop Grogg at the intersection of Prospect and Looney streets. Grogg's 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass allegedly displayed a fraudulent inspection sticker, according to State Police spokesman Sgt. Kenneth McCord.

Spencer Police Chief Gary Williams said Patrolman Clint Wilson thought he had Grogg's vehicle blocked from escaping. Wilson got out of his cruiser before Grogg backed up, hitting the cruiser in the process. Grogg then drove off, according to the Times-Record.

Grogg fled on Pike Street and then onto U.S. 33/119, heading east out of Spencer.

Trooper P.S. Fisher of the State Police detachment in Spencer became involved in the pursuit and was able to pull in front of Grogg's vehicle in the Bowers Hill area before Grogg allegedly hit the cruiser from behind.

McCord said Grogg then allegedly sideswiped the cruiser as he continued traveling east on U.S. 33/119.

Grogg eventually turned onto Triplett Road, next to the State Police barracks, and traveled a short distance before Fisher was able to get in front of the vehicle again, forcing it to a stop, according to the Times-Record.

Grogg was originally charged with attempted murder for his actions involving striking the cruiser as well as assault on a police officer, among other charges.
