RECESSION WATCH: WV Bankruptcy Filings Up 27% In '09

Bankruptcy filings in West Virginia rose by 27 percent in 2009. The northern half of WV fared worse than the southern half. U.S. Bankruptcy Court Northern District administrator Mike Sturm says the number of bankruptcy filings in the 32-county district rose by an estimated 40 percent in 2009. Southern District bankruptcy clerk Jo Proops says bankruptcy filings in her district rose by 15 percent. Nationwide, bankruptcy filings increased 32 percent last year.
