COUNTY RECOVERS FROM BLIZZARD - Citizens "Stepped To The Plate"

(01/02/2010)
The Blizzard of '09 brought some trying times to Calhoun families with power and telephone outages, blocked highways and in some cases, serious problems related to health and well-being.

Calhoun's OES/911 Director Kathy Wood said, "I would like to thank everyone that helped through the storm."

"I can't even begin to say how grateful I am to live in a county where people come together in an emergency," she said.

Wood said that most people in the Calhoun community stepped up to the plate with efforts and assistance to come through the weather crisis.

Wood said she would like to thank everyone personally, noting there's always a problem with leaving folks out.

"Thanks to the firemen who cleared the trees from our roads, the members of First Baptist Church in Grantsville who opened our shelter, and the Department of Highways for clearing the snow from our roads," Wood said.

"The men and women who distributed water and Houchin's and Foodland for loaning equipment. Dick Ullum for transporting 3000 gallons of bottled water into the county from the state's OES, and the firemen who helped get Mule Knob Tower up and running again."

"Thanks to our 911 dispatchers who never missed a call. Allegheny Power and their crews from surrounding states who worked around the clock restoring electric."
