WIRT COUNTY FACES THE GRAND FINALE - Legislature Denies Vote To Allow Them To Help Themselves

(03/07/2002)
Wirt County is struggling for its survival, with the county recently requesting to extend the time to set levy rates. Senator Oliverio (D) of Monongahela and Senator Mitchell (D) of Kanawha voted against the measure.

Senator Donna Boley said "I am at a complete loss why those senators would not want Wirt voters to help themselves." Wirt County is voting on a levy to help with "bare bones" expenses to keep the county running.

Senator Boley further stated "I doubt seriously if there will be much extra money to help counties this year." Governor Wise has taken $20 million of the $28 million in the Budget Digest, formerly allocated around the state. He is using the money to give teachers pay raises.

"It appears they are like the Capitol Hawk, waiting to scoop up the smaller counties when they can't help themselves any longer." she concluded.
