Glenville, WV - Glenville State College is accepting applicants for a unique joint Nursing program with West Virginia University. Under this program, students complete their freshman and sophomore years at GSC and their junior and senior years at West Virginia Institute of Technology in Montgomery, West Virginia.
"The Glenville State College/WVU Collaborative Nursing program is not only important to Glenville State College but also to the citizens of central West Virginia. It has always been the goal of Glenville State College to be responsive to the educational needs of the area. One critical need at this time is the need for skilled nurses. By providing this program at GSC, we are doing our part to try to address the current need for nurses. Many of our collaborative program graduates come back to central West Virginia to practice. That is a win-win for all of us," said GSC Provost and Senior Vice President Dr. Kathy Butler.
The GSC/WVU Joint Nursing Program combines the advantages of a small college environment in a rural setting with clinical experiences in a major medical center. The program meets the general education requirements of both Glenville State College and West Virginia University and incorporates the WVU School of Nursing professional nursing requirements. The program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. GSC/WVU Joint Nursing Program students graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from West Virginia University.
"Glenville State College was the perfect place for me to start my nursing training. You have to get off to a solid start with the science courses because everything builds upon that knowledge. The small classes at GSC allow you to get more individual instruction and that helps you build the necessary foundation to become a good nurse," said Corrie Lay-Grogg who is a May 2007 graduate of the GSC/WVU Nursing Program.
"When it came time to take my Boards, I felt that the comprehensive training that I received in the program had prepared me well," she added. Grogg is a traveling labor and delivery nurse who is now working in San Antonio, Texas. She has also worked at Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Weston, West Virginia and as a traveling nurse in Arkansas and New Mexico. "My Nursing Degree has provided me with an opportunity to earn an excellent salary for me and my family. She lives in San Antonio with her husband Jeramy and ten month old son Lexington. Grogg is currently working on a Master's of Science in Nursing from the University of Cincinnati.
Students interested in the GSC/WVU Nursing Program may enroll at Glenville State College as pre-nursing students. For admission to the pre-nursing program, students must submit an official high school transcript that indicates successful completion of the following courses: one unit of Biology, one unit of Chemistry, three units of Mathematics including at least two in Algebra, and four units of English. Students who have not completed all of these courses will be considered for admission on an individual basis.
