West Virginia has more than 5 million birth, death and marriage certificates.

They are now easier to access online.

The West Virginia Division of Culture and History's Archives and History Section has upgraded the server to its free, online searchable database.

Director Joe Geiger said visitors can now access and download the information faster.

Available records include death certificates issued as early as 1836 and as recently as 1970.

Birth records issued between 1790 and 1908 are also available in all 55 counties.

The database also includes some marriage certificates issued as early as 1780 and some as late as 1971.
