BUNCH ESCAPED SERIOUS INJURY - "An Extreme Rescue Situation"

(03/05/2002)
Calhoun resident Lowell Bunch, who miraculously escaped death when his vehicle plunged over one of the area's steepest hillsides, was treated and transfered from Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center to St. Jospeh Hospital in Parkersburg, where he has been receiving care for complications resulting from the accident. A family spokesperson said he is expected to be released from the hospital soon.

The Bunch vehicle collided with a car backing onto the highway at Russett, February 28, after which it spun out of control and went over the hill, landing in Steer Creek near its juncture with the Little Kanawha River.

Deputy Sheriff Carl Ballengee called it "An extreme rescue situation for around here. We're grateful for our emergency workers," he said.

Police cited Melissa Lamp, 17, of Russett for no operators, no insurance and failure to yield right-of-way, according to Ballengee.
