Leota Belle Kelley McClain, 85 - Elkins

Leota Belle Kelley McClain, 85, of Elkins, passed away Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at Colonial Place in Elkins, where she had lived for the last six years.

She was born Feb. 19, 1924, at White Pine, W.Va., a daughter of the late Bud and Ora Mae Johnson Kelley. Leota was the last surviving member of her family. She was married to Irvin S. McClain on May 25, 1943, who preceded her in death.

Surviving is one daughter, Shelia Kandes Crawford; one granddaughter, Stephanie Elin Haynes and husband, Voras; one great-grandson, Nicholas Crawford Haynes, all of Elkins; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Craig S. McClain; her son-in-law, D. Stephen Crawford; one great-granddaughter, Lillie Katherine Haynes; two brothers, Fred Kelley and Orville Kelley; and five sisters, Georgia Plant, Greta Whipkey, Nola Kight, Audrey Greathouse and Herma Winchester.

Mrs. McClain attended the schools of Calhoun County and for many years worked as a cook at the Grantsville Elementary School. Her passions included her family and golfing. Leota was a member of the First Baptist Church of Clarksburg.

Friends may call from 6-7 p.m. today at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be at 7 p.m. today from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Dr. Marvin L. Parli officiating. Interment will follow at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Bethlehem Cemetery at Grantsville, W.Va.
