INSURANCE CO. SETTLES WITH CALHOUN WOMAN OVER ALLEGED FALL

(10/26/2009)
A Grantsville woman has been awarded $15,000 in a settlement related to her claim against the county for injuries.

Cheryl Collins, represented by attorney Randall Galford, said in the suit, she "slipped and fell while walking down the interior courthouse steps, after water from a hose on the courthouse lawn caused the walkways to the courthouse to be quite wet, such that the pedestrian traffic tracked water onto the inside of the courthouse steps making these wet and slippery ..."

The suit claimed negligence for injuries she says she experienced in a slip and fall in the courthouse in 2007.

Commissioners maintained that Collins alleged accident was not reported to them or any official in the courthouse in 2007, only learning of the incident at the time the lawsuit was filed, indicating there was no request for any assistance or ambulance at the time of the incident.

Collins claims she suffered injuries to her "back, hips, legs arms and other body parts."

The county was represented by Tanya Hunt Handley of Charleston law firm MacCorkle, Lavender and Sweeney.
