ROANE BEATS CALHOUN - The "Facts" And "Rest Of The Story"

(10/17/2009)
By Gaylen Duskey

This is a story of two sides since there is no way that one side can do justice.

One is the Jack Webb "just the facts ma'am" side. while the other is Paul Harvey's "the rest of the story."

First, "just the facts."

Roane County scored two touchdowns in the last 34.3 seconds of the game to come from behind and beat Calhoun County 26-15 Friday night on a muddy field in near freezing temperatures at Roane County Stadium.

Calhoun was badly hampered by injuries. Tailback Randy Fluharty hurt his leg just before halftime and did not play in the second half.

Quarterback Zach Moore twisted an ankle trying to punt in the quagmire and played the rest of the game basically on one leg, and then only on offense, giving way his position on the defensive line and as the team's starting punter.

Ray Phillips suffered an ankle injury and walked and ran gingerly after that.

The Red Devils were hampered by penalties being whistled 12 times for 125 yards.

Calhoun jumped to a quick lead on Fluharty's four year run. Moore's extra point run made it 8-0.

Not long after that, Moore teamed up with Bronson Clark for a 25-yard touchdown. Moore's extra point kick made it 15-0.

That was the last Calhoun would score as Roane came back with 26 unanswered, including a Calhoun safety and Dylan Cottrell's 76-yard uncontested interception return as time expired.

The touchdown that was the killer came with :34.3 left on Rhett Adkinson's one-yard quarterback sneak.

The loss drops Calhoun to 4-3 on the season.
