Little Kanawha Hotel (1808) is river's most historic
structure still standing, still avoiding restoration

Civil War encampment, not unlike it really happened,
a short distance from Wirt's historic courthouse

The 9th Annual Wirt County Pioneer Day reflecting on times past, is set for today in Elizabeth.

The day centers around rural life traditions of Wirt and regional ancestors to help keep their memories alive.

Tom Poe and his group will be square dancing at 10:00 a.m. on Washington Street, or you can take a break and relax for awhile under the bluegrass tent and listen to Richard Weaver and Friends, the Hardway Family, Country Mix, North End, No Expectations, and New Picture.

The Beauchamp-Newman Museum will open for tours at 10:00 A.M. and the Hope Shop will be stirring-up apple butter on the museum lawn.

There is a great selection of items for lunch. Around the square will be delicious pulled pork sandwiches, loaded baked potatoes, hot dogs, ice cream and baked goods.

A number of artists will be demonstrating their pioneer skills. Rob Pitts will be blacksmithing over the hot coals and Jack Simmons will be grinding corn.

Wanda Wayne will be weaving baskets and Deborah Haddox will be throwing pots on her potter's wheel. Other demonstrations include weaving on a loom, spinning yarn, paper foundation quilt piecing, crochet, and knitting.

There will be wood crafts, kid's toys, antiques, photos, scrap booking supplies, and beef jerky products.

Johnny Boston will be on hand with some of his antique tractors and equipment. You can listen to the sounds of the antique engines and look at antique blow torches, including some restored Maytag engines.

The trappers will display their traps and furs and a petting zoo will be set-up for the younger crowd to enjoy.

The Wirt County High School parking lot will be the location of the antique and classic car show. Regional residents are invited to bring their classic vehicles for the public to enjoy.

The Wirt Volunteer Fire Department will be have theiir Spaghetti Dinner and giving away prizes starting at 5:00 p.m.
