MORE WEST VIRGINIANS GETTING FOOD STAMPS

(09/28/2009)
In a state that has among the lowest incomes in the USA, more residents are receiving food stamps.

West Virginia is a state where the food stamp program began in 1961.

During the nation's financial collapse, more US citizens nationwide are getting food stamps.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that in June, about 35.1 million Americans got benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — the new name for food stamps.

That is an all-time high.

With the unemployment rate doubled since last year, more than 306,000 WV residents got food stamps in August. That's up from 244,000 in August 2008.

The latest recipients are mostly newcomers to the food stamp program.
