IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS ON COMMISSIONS AGENDA - Deputy Sheriff At School Unresolved

Calhoun Commissioners unanimously requested in Monday's meeting that the West Virginia Public Service Commission investigate financial and management issues with the Mt. Zion Public Service Board, saying problems "critically need to be resolved."   Read earlier Hur Herald story

The commission appointed Roscoe Gainer as a PSD board member to fill the term of Della Nichols, whose term will expire January, 2014.

- Commission continued to be on record supporting the paving of the road behind Calhoun Middle-High School to the school board office, garage and county's E-911 center.

- Bill Ellis from Minnie Hamilton Health System was appointed to the Regional EMS Board.

- Sheriff Allen Parsons advised the commission that he, Shari Johnson and Charles McCroskey would be going to the governor's grant award ceremony Tuesday to accept a grant for the placement of a deputy sheriff, known as a Resource Officer, at Calhoun Middle-High School.

Shari Johnson advised the commission that she was upset about how commission president Bob Weaver represents them, after Weaver expressed concerns regarding her management of the grant application.

The commissioners have maintained not to approve Sheriff Allen Parsons' hiring of Charles McCroskey for the school placement until the grant contract is received and budgetary questions are resolved.

Sheriff Parson's hired McCroskey over two months ago because of a need to send him [McCroskey] for schooling.

The commission advised the sheriff they would call a special meeting to discuss the issue when the grant contract arrives.

- The commission's executive secretary Danielle Stevens scheduled a meeting with county fire chiefs to have them refund and discontinue a 911 tower fund.

- Work is expected to commence on an outside lighting project for the courthouse, using a courthouse security grant.

- The county clerk's office is attempting to find funding for the management of records.

- The Calhoun Commission will attempt to get stimulus funds for the purchase of a new sheriff's department cruiser.

- The commission is working on obtaining grant funding for chair lifts for inside the courthouse.

- Minnie Hamilton Health System is seeking to find resources to destroy old hospital records, some of which are currently stacked in the courthouse.

- The commission is working on improving access to county polling locations, in the courthouse, at Calhoun Park and the Upper West Fork Park.

- The commission is moving ahead to find funding to pave sections of the Calhoun County Park walking trail and to assist in further developing camping sites at the park.
