CALHOUN SCHOOL BOARD HAS JOINED LAWSUIT

(08/22/2009)
The Lewis County Board of Education will join at least 30 other counties, including Calhoun, in a class action lawsuit.

The Other Post Employment Benefits [OPEB] lawsuit seeks clarification on who should be responsible for paying certain retirement benefits, local school boards or the state.

The Calhoun school system will be joining litigation against the State of West Virginia related to seeking relief over county school boards being held accountable for debt incurred by the state, being placed on county financial statements.

The counties that have signed on want to be relieved of the liability of reporting, and funding the payoffs saying it would be a burden on those counties that don't have the necessary means.

School board officials say given the economy it could not have come at worse time.
