DOMINION REDUCES HASTINGS WORKFORCE - Contract Up On April 1

(02/12/2002)
More than 1000 Dominion employees in West Virginia are in contract talks with the Richmond, Virginia based energy company. Dominion, now one of the largest energy companies in America, purchased the former Hope and CNG concerns, familiar to area residents. The contract expires on April 1.

Benefit plans and job security are high on the list being discussed. The company recently agreed to five-year contracts with two unions.

The company, which has a major public relations campaign encouraging their employees to become involved in community service, allows eight hours a year for volunteer firemen to respond to fire calls. They must then use their vacation time.

Hundreds of jobs have been eliminated by the corporate giants in the past few years. More recently, about 30 jobs are being eliminated at Hastings Station, which is undergoing further automation. Locally, four field positions will be added to the Grantsville office, apparently linked to the elimination of those jobs. They are expected to be filled by internal transfer.

Dominion now serves nearly four million natural gas and electric customers.
