WV'S RURAL POST OFFICES NOT ON CLOSURE LIST

(08/05/2009)
Rural post offices in West Virginia appears to have escaped cutbacks being proposed by the US Postal system.

The US Postal Service, facing monumental debt, is looking at closing hundreds of post offices nationwide.

Currently only seven post offices in West Virginia are on the suggested closure list.

The offices on the short list are: Kanawha Carrier Annex, Charleston Carrier Annex, Stonewall, Marmet Station, Spring Hill Station, Station C - Charleston, Capitol Station - Charleston.

There is a 12% decline in mail volume, primarily because of Internet and cell phone communication, with a current debt of $2.3 billion.

There is a projected loss of $6 billion loss by the end of the fiscal year.

US Postal rep Cathy Yarosky says, "We have already responded aggressively to the decreases in mail."
