"Bucky" Miller charged
with two counts of murder
By Bob Weaver
Calhoun citizens who live along the Left Fork of Sycamore Creek can rest a little easier tonight.
State Police have charged thirty-three-year-old Kirk Alan "Bucky" Miller with the gruesome, up-close shotgun deaths of Mike and Julie Flanagan, both 52 (pictured left) at their home on Easter Sunday.
Miller, whose address is listed as Salem, WV was arrested in Ritchie County. He has been charged with two counts of murder and is being held in North Central Regional Jail without bond.
Miller, a well tender in the remote backwoods, was well-known to the Flanagans and the community, with sources close to the situation saying it was not uncommon for him to have lunch with the couple.
Those sources told the Herald they notified police about their suspicions related to Miller, saying Mike Flanagan had loaded guns in the corners of the house.
"It had to be someone he knew well," they said.
Reportedly the only thing missing from the house was cash. Flanagan deposited enough money in the bank to write checks, but kept a considerable amount of cash at home.
Mike Flanagan's brother Steve, who lives in West Palm Beach Florida, said "This arrest is a relief. We were a close-knit family. I'll never be able to bring my brother back, but it's a weight off my back."
Steve Flanagan had been to Calhoun this week with a sister, helping the family settle the estate.
"It has been really hard on my dad, who has gone downhill these last two months," he said.
"They [Mike and Julie] loved Calhoun and the people, living in the country and raising a garden on his 50-acre farm," Steve Flanagan told the Herald.
He said his brother had been an acquaintance of Miller for about two-and-one-half years.
