SUGAR SHACK IS ARNOLDSBURG BRIGHT SPOT

(07/07/2009)

Story and photo by Maggie Volkwein

Roxy's Sugar Shack, pizza restaurant, ice cream parlor, and video arcade just celebrated their grand re-opening.

Flooding in May put the Arnoldsburg business under four feet of water.

The Sims family from Arnoldsburg are opening their restaurant with new hours - 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. each day, except Wednesday.

They are serving tacos, hot dogs, pizza in the round or by the slice, and the famous Arnoldsburger.

"Only the best for our customers," says Linda Sims, who leans on the spotless counter while the 1950's music with its growly sax and dreamy harmonies drift through the video arcade.

"We're making that West Virginia hot dog sauce everybody likes at all the festivals around here. The Ole Village Bakery in Arnoldsburg makes the pizza crust," Linda said.

"My husband Pete and the kids, Daniel, Darren, and Roxy all pitched in after the flood. Pete was in the restaurant bailing, absolutely bailing the place out."

"This past year has been the hardest in my life. Well, we came to settle down in Calhoun County, and we love it here. We're not going to let that flood get us down," she said.

Pete and Linda's kids move back and forth busily, handing us our hand-dipped ice cream cones. We eat them outside under the huge rainbow-colored umbrellas.

Last year, Linda hung little flags on the fence. The flood waters came clear up to the little flags. The battered, worn flags from last Independence Day are still flying, just like the cleanup team and all that has gone into the re-opening of Roxy's Sugar Shack.

Ice cream, anyone?
