James David Hathaway, Calhoun County High School class of 1959, recalled school days with the attendees at the 22nd Alumni Reunion Saturday.

"We had hand me down clothes and shoes, watched Saturday night wrestling on a small screen TV, had family get-togethers and learned how to quarrel without wounding each other," Hathaway said.

"I remember Fred Barnes' flower and twig trips on the Joker Ridge and Coach Underwood teaching us to think as winners. Hardships led to self-sufficiency," he said.

Several hundred Calhoun County High School grads and their families attended the reunion this weekend, recalling memories and renewing friendships.

George Bell, the Class of 1949, said "We learned about work ethic and service to others."

He remembered school days in Grantsville, and when school was dismissed to go see the "Wizard of Oz" and "Gone with the Wind" at the Kanawha Theater.

Bell honored the extraordinary number of young men from Calhoun who went to war in World War II and Korea.

"Life's been a beautiful ride," he concluded.
