(07/01/2009)
A Roane County grandmother, Kathy Saunders, 57 and her four-year-old grandson died in an accident west of Spencer yesterday morning.

An eastbound dump truck pulling a trailer was passing Saunder's westbound Toyota Camry when the truck's load shifted and a rented manlift it was towing fell on the smaller vehicle, said Trooper S.E. McCullough.

Reports indicate the accident happened about 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of Route 33 and Reedyville Road.

Investigating police say Ms. Saunders of Stover Fork, and her grandson, who was sitting in the back seat on the driver's side, were killed instantly.

Another passenger, Saunders' 8-year-old grandson was injured and airlifted to Charleston Area Medical Center's General Hospital, where he is listed in fair condition.

The truck is reportedly owned by Cox Well Service, and was driven by Harry Dewayne Cox, 49, of Spencer, who was uninjured in the accident.
