ACCUSED MURDERER SHOT AT MARTINSBURG HOSPITAL

(06/20/2009)
An Eastern Regional Jail corrections officer shot and wounded an inmate who tried to escape from the Martinsburg City Hospital's emergency department Friday evening, where the man was being treated for self-inflicted lacerations, police said.

Donald Berkley Surber Jr., 37 (left) who is accused of murdering Katherine Nicole Sharp during a 26-hour hostage standoff at her home earlier in the week, was in critical condition after being shot at about 8:30 p.m., said Martinsburg Police Chief Ted Anderson.

Surber was taken from the Eastern Regional Jail to the hospital's emergency room for "self-inflicted lacerations to his wrist." Surber was shot by an ERJ correctional officer when he attempted to escape. The bullet entered through his upper arm and into his chest area. Surber was transferred to a Winchester, Virginia hospital for treatment.

The Martinsburg City Police, Berkeley County Sheriff's Department and West Virginia State Police were on the scene at the hospital Friday night.
