Clark K. "June" Townsend Jr., 91 - Elizabeth

Clark K. "June" Townsend Jr., 91 of Elizabeth West Virginia, passed away at his residence, Thursday June 4, 2009.

He was born December 7, 1917 in Steubenville, Ohio the son of the Late Clark K. and Ada Doolittle Townsend.

June joined the Navy in April 1940 and trained in Norfolk, Virginia. He was aboard a CVII and aircraft carrier Lexington, which sunk. He served Espiritu Santo Naval Base in the New Hebrides Islands. He was wounded on the destroyer DD 733 that was sunk off the coast of Okinawa. He also did patrol on a navel base at Burmington, Washington. He was stationed in San Diego during World War II. He was discharged April 26, 1946 as 1st class Torpedoman.

He retired from Boilermaker local 667. He received his 55 year pin from the Boilermakers on August 27, 2006. He attended Beulah Humble Presbyterian Church, baptized in 2004.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barcelena Mace Townsend; 1 sister, Evelyn Waggoner of Charleston; and several nieces and nephews.

Uncle June was a very special "Dad" to some of his nieces and nephews who will miss his wisdom and sense of humor.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by 5 brothers, Bill, Clair, Harry, Paul and Ellis Townsend; 2 sisters, Marjorie Brown and Betty Carper.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, June 8 at Matheny Whited Funeral Home of Elizabeth with Rev. William Stutler officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home Sunday June 7 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and until time of the service on Monday. Interment will be at Beulah Hill Cemetery.
