LEGISLATORS CAN'T DECIDE TO INSURE 180 SCHOOL DAYS

(05/23/2009)
The special session of the West Virginia Legislature will continue to come to grips with trying to make sure WV students attend school for 180 days.

Gov. Joe Manchin once called it "a simple fix.

The House and Senate education committees labored over the issue much of the 2009 session, with several sharp disagreements>

"We've all had discussions even since the session on the education bills, and there doesn't seem to be any consensus between the House and the Senate on any form of calendar bill," said Dale Lee, the president of the West Virginia Education Association.

The 180 day rule has been the object of discontent by state teacher's unions.

It could be on the agenda for the upcoming special session.
