Cleo Cottrell Lawson, 83 - Elizabeth

Cleo M. Lawson, 83, of Elizabeth, W.Va., passed away May 9, 2009, at St. Joseph's Hospital following a short illness.

She was born July 11, 1925, in Calhoun County, W.Va., the daughter of Perry and Laura Rogers Cottrell. She spent her younger years cutting stone for the NYA building in Grantsville and working in a rubber plant in Massillon, Ohio. After relocating to Elizabeth, W.Va., in 1955, she spent several years working for the Rubber Fabricators in Grantsville, W.Va.

Cleo was a member of the Pine Twist Church, Wirt County CEOS, The Ladies Auxiliary and Wirt County Country and Gospel Music Association. She represented Wirt County as their Belle in 2004 and donated her time to helping others by working in the Elizabeth Hope Shop each week for the past 30 years.

She is survived by two sons, Russ and his wife, Sue Cottrell, and Ron and his wife, Cindy Lawson, and one brother, John "Wes" Cottrell, all of Elizabeth; five grandchildren, Garrett, Garald, Todd and Shannon Cottrell and Chad Lawson; and five great grandchildren.

In 1953, she was married to Lawrence "Windy" Lawson, who preceded in her in death in July of 2008. She was also preceded in death by one son, Tony Cottrell; her parents; and six brothers, Ezra, Lewis, Francis, Lawrence, Oakey and Woodrow Cottrell.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Matheny Whited Funeral Home in Elizabeth with the Rev. Dean Ash and William Cottrell officiating. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday and until time of service Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will be at K of P Cemetery in Elizabeth.
