CALHOUN HAS TRIED TO OBTAIN BETTER CELL PHONE SERVICE

(05/09/2009)
In the USA there is a dramatic shift from land-line telephones to cell phones.

Now, across the US, for the first time, the number of cell phones has surpassed land lines.

The national recession is likely contributing to the disconnect of land-line service.

Rural West Virginia, a mountainous state, not unlike connection rates to high-speed Internet service, is way behind in cell-phone access, likely because of the need to construct more towers for access by consumers.

Calhoun and our regional counties still have sketchy service.

About five years ago, the Calhoun Commission made an effort to get cell phone companies to expand service to the region, offering free 911 tower access.

More recently, those free tower efforts have been renewed.

There are no takers.
