RED CROSS HELPS CALHOUN, GILMER AND ROANE DURING FLOODING

(05/08/2009)
The American Red Cross responded to Gilmer, Calhoun and Roane Counties during this week's flooding.

* In Calhoun County, Red Cross volunteers continue to perform damage assessment and have provided 7 families with financial assistance for emergency clothing, food and bedding. The majority of the damage is in Arnoldsburg, Minorra and Orma.

Over $1600 in direct financial assistance has been provided by Red Cross to Calhoun residents.

* In Gilmer County, a shelter was opened at Sand Fork Church which was later shut down when the waters receded. No homes sustained damage requiring financial assistance although some clean-up kits were distributed.

* In Roane County, Red Cross volunteers have completed damage assessments. A Service Center was opened for one day at the Newton Volunteer Fire Department. Two families were assisted and over $3300 in direct assistance was provided to Roane County residents.

The majority of the damage was in Left Hand and Walton.

The Service Center may be reopened if conditions warrant. Cots and blankets have been stored in the event the Newton Community Building is needed as a shelter.

Since the flooding began, the Red Cross has provided direct financial assistance to thirty persons of which 15 are children.

If someone has been affected by the flood and has not been visited by Red Cross, call 304-485-7311.

Red Cross has not been actively fundraising in these areas and is issuing assistance from a pool of money which comes from other parts of WV and beyond.

Donors can help people affected by disasters like this recent flooding by donating to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

On rare occasions when donations exceed Red Cross expenses for a specific disaster, contributions are used to prepare for and serve victims of other disasters. Donations will be accepted at American Red Cross Mid-Ohio Valley Chapter, 220 8th Street, Parkersburg, WV 26101. Secure online donations can be made to www.mov.redcross.org

Credit card donations can also be made by calling 304-485-7311.
