The Minnie Hamilton Volunteer Chaplain's Association observed the 58th Annual National Day of Prayer yesterday in front of the county courthouse.

Pastor Mary Zimmer said "We lifted up the leaders of our country, state, county, and city in prayer; our children and their teachers; our peace officers, those serving the military and the veterans who have sacrificed to serve our nation."

The 2009 theme is "Prayer! America's Hope" and is based on the verse from Psalm 33:22 which states: "May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in you."

The MMHS Chaplains' Association would like to thank everyone who came out for National Day of Prayer.

"Considering the weather, we had a great turn out. We also want to thank everyone who came by for hotdogs. Because of your generosity, we were able to donate $362.92 to the Grantsville Food Pantry," said Pastor Zimmer.

EVERY HEAD BOWED...

Days set aside for a time of prayer have been called for since 1775, when the Continental Congress designated a time for prayer in forming a new nation.

In 1863, Abraham Lincoln called for such a day.

Officially, the National Day of Prayer was established as an annual event by an act of Congress in 1952 and was signed into law by President Truman.

President Reagan amended the law in 1988, designating the first Thursday of May each year as the National Day of Prayer.
