Glenville, WV - Glenville native Brock McVaney has been selected as the Glenville State College Pioneer Mascot for the 2009-2010 school year. McVaney was selected after completing the Pioneer Mascot application process which includes an essay, references, and an interview with the selection committee. "I am really looking forward to being the Pioneer. I grew up as a GSC Pioneer fan and am excited to be given this opportunity to represent the college," said the new Pioneer Mascot.

McVaney is a 2005 graduate of Gilmer County High School where he played football, basketball, and baseball for the Titans. He is a senior at GSC where he is majoring in Education with a concentration in Early Education and Elementary Education. McVaney was a member of the Pioneer Football team for two years before suffering a career ending knee injury. "The entire atmosphere here at GSC is special. I just love it here. I really appreciate the one-on-one attention that you get from your professors.

Evan Aldridge, the 2008-09 Pioneer Mascot, and McVaney are best friends and roommates. "I thought about trying to be the Pioneer last year, but Evan was a senior so it was his last chance. Now it is my turn. If things go well, I may apply to be the Pioneer for a second year," said McVaney.

As the GSC Pioneer, McVaney's duties will include attending all home football and basketball games, tournaments, and other school events. He also plans on traveling to some of the away games. The Pioneer is charged with working with GSC students, faculty, and staff to positively promote and support the college. McVaney plans on representing the Glenville State College at more than just sporting events. "I want to get involved and be more visible with other GSC activities on the campus and in the community. I want to promote the college whenever I can. I intend to participate in the upcoming Gilmer County Relay for Life," he said.

The official uniform of the GSC Pioneer mascot is a set of buckskins, a coonskin hat, and a musket. A new set of buckskins and a new musket are being made for McVaney.

In addition to serving as the Pioneer mascot, McVaney is the President of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, serves as an assistant coach for the Lady Pioneer Softball team, and is member of the Gilmer County Volunteer Fire Department.

"I just can't wait to interact with the fans and help build excitement for GSC teams. I plan on being the number one Pioneer Fan," said McVaney.

McVaney is the son of long time GSC Pioneer fans Nancy and Jess McVaney of Glenville
