Rev. Carlos Nutter filled his regular appointment at the Burning Springs M.E. Church and served Holy Communion.

Both Calhoun County Commissioner Robert Weaver and Wirt County Commissioner Robert Lowe were attending to business in Creston over the weekend. Some folks just know where "the action is".

Mr. & Mrs. Bobby Ray Starcher & daughter Carol were spending some time at their place on Rowell's Run.

Some of the turkey hunters reported less than spectacular luck. Some fishermen report great luck in the harvest of finny critters.

Several Creston residents attended and participated in the big gala event down near the mouth of Tucker's Creek, otherwise known as the Elizabeth Town Wide Yard Sale. A few sprinkles didn't dampen the enthusiasm of true bargain hunters.

Euell Russell was attending to business in Grantsville.

Dogwoods are now in bloom but some noted that there didn't seem to be as many trees as there once was. There is a killer fungus that has killed many of the small trees which were formerly used for spokes.

The West Virginia Farm Bureau will hold an ag institute for teachers June 18 & 19 up at Morgantown. 3 hours graduate credit can be obtained from WVU for participation. For details contact Alvin Engelke or log onto www.wvfarm.org

It would appear that, at least locally, there have been more gardens planted than in the recent past which indicates a concern about having food in troubled times. One of the Big Eared One's appointments Cass Sunstein, a Harvard law professor as head of the department of "Information & Regulatory Affairs, Department" at the White House. Not so long back Professor Sunstein wrote that "Animals should be permitted to bring suit with human beings as their representatives to prevent violations of current law ... " He later argued in favor of eliminating greyhound racing (Wouldn't that mess up the Big Boss & his buddies down at the Mouth of the Elk), cosmetic testing and meat eating. He stated that the current treatment of livestock & other animals should be considered "a form of unconscionable barbarity not the same as, but in many ways morally akin to slavery and mass extermination of human beings."

The director of research at the Center for Consumer Freedom noted that "Sunstein's work could spell the end of animal agriculture, retail sales of meat and dairy foods, hunting and fishing, and countless other things that Americans take for granted." Of course, shifting gears somewhat, the Big Eared One's decision to settle Hamas terrorists in America, is kind, gentle likely 'morally superior'. No doubt they will be good little boys and not be mean like farmers to animals.

Part of the "change we can believe in" apparently are new laws and substantial taxes "to fight global warming); even though the planet presently is cooling. The new tax will be at least $3,000/family based on the use of electricity and purchased gas or oil or coal for heating plus the added cost of every item that one purchases. This will give some folks in government huge sums to "play with" and pretend to fight global warming -- sorta like when Don Quixote decided to fight the windmills. The High Priest of the Global Warming Church refuses to debate and those who would question 'the orthodoxy' are banished and reminded of the Spanish Inquisition. The so called hockey stick graph was proven wrong years ago but, of course, the argument isn't about facts; it's about government control and more and more taxes. The Vikings farmed in Greenland during the Middle Ages until the Little Ice Age changed matters drastically. For the last 10 years there has been a cooling which seems to be related to the activity of the sun. When moisture and fertility are current and sunlight abundant, the controlling factor for the growth of corn is the availability of carbon dioxide (C02). Of course C02 isn't a pollutant but a necessary chemical for plant growth. Surely even vegetarians understand that carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is necessary for life as we know it.

The folks that have been working for Cabot Oil & Gas report that things are slow in Pennsylvania and that some of the supervisors have but a rudimentary understanding of oilfield work. Apparently several drilling operations are or have been "hung in the hole".

It was reported that Hard Rock's horizontal well in the Huron shale at Penile in Roane County is a "Slunger" and that they have staked several more horizontal wells in the area.

The price of local Penn grade crude oil rose $2.25/bbl to $45.75. One area producer who had his natural gas locked in at the $9 rate was told that the new lock in rate would be perhaps somewhere around $5/MCF for the next three years.

Some local residents attended the Wirt County FFA banquet & awards event which was spectacular, to say the least. The program obviously provides both hands on and book learning which is useful, universal and related to the area. Part of the musical score was the new hit lamenting the big boys & the government shutting Detroit down. Of course the ruination of the automobile business has been full bore ahead for many years now with government regulations, union rules and prohibitive costs. Someone in the government said quit making cars that ordinary folks can fix & now, apparently, it is illegal to modify what the government goons mandate on cars.
