SPENCER MAN'S CONDITION SERIOUS AFTER GUNSHOT - Weapon Discharges Inside Moving Car

(01/25/2002)
A Spencer man remains in serious condition in Charleston Area Medical Center from a gunshot wound suffered Monday night.

Denzil Mace, Jr., 38, a member of the Roane County Emergency Squad, was shot by a .22 rifle while traveling inside a car on Otto Road, near State Route 36. Mace was air-lifted by a HealthNet chopper to the medical center, where a spokesperson says he is recovering.

Roane County Chief Deputy Sheriff, Jeff Smith said Mace was riding in the front passenger seat of the vehicle when the gun discharged. The driver of the car was Edward Fields, 20, of Spencer, and the victim's nephew, Jeff Mace, 19, was a passenger in the back seat.

Chief Deputy Smith said the gun's barrel was resting against the vehicle's console, and when the back seat passenger leaned forward, the weapon discharged.

The bullet whet through the seat where Denzil Mace was sitting, entering his back. Smith said the vehicle was full of toys, garbage and junk and some of the objects may have struck the trigger.
