CHORAL PERFORMANCE TACKLES BACH TO ROCK N' ROLL

(05/02/2009)

The Glenville State College choir performs a selection

By Drew Moody

Glenville State College's spring choir concert Tuesday evening appeared to be equally enjoyable for the performers and audience alike.

Choir director Teresa Dody brings a new level of attention to the style and technique of vocal offerings at the school.

Although undoubtedly a proverbial "back seat driver" she all but disappeared in the performance.

Students were given the opportunity to conduct several numbers. The Glenville State College Bluegrass Band joined in to help too, along with piano instructor Anita White.

A smaller group of chamber singers added a distinctive sound.

Staging was reminiscent of an early 1990s bare bones Bruce Springsteen tour thrusting the E-Street Band onstage with a no-frills, nothing-to-hide-behind performance to a series of sold out U.S. shows.

It created a perfect backdrop to showcase the vocal talent of GSC's students.

The performance put the 'icing' on the cake.

Jasmine and Jessica Patterson (L-R) join the choir in John
Denver's music during the second half of the performance.
The finale was a tribute to the rock group Queen. Jasmine,
20, and Jessica, 19, are sisters hailing from Pennsylvania.
Both are pursuing teacher education degrees at GSC.

In a "dressed down" second half the choir wore spray-painted tee-shirts of their own design which, from a distance, appeared to be an upscale tie-dyed variety that would have made The Grateful Dead proud.

"You can't do rock music in pearls and heels," Doty said matter-of-factly, following the show.

Following a John Denver ("Country Roads" - "Thank God I'm a Country Boy") melody the choir closed the performance with a tribute to the rock group Queen.
