MAYOR KNIGHT PLEADS NO CONTEST TO EASTER SUNDAY BATTERY CHARGE

(05/01/2009)
Grantsville Mayor Gary Knight has plead no contest to a battery charge filed against him related to an Easter Sunday incident with Grantsville resident Christopher Todd Smith.

Knight, according to the criminal compliant filed by Sgt. J. E. Skidmore of the WV State Police, "did unlawfully and intentionally make physical contact in a provoking nature," when the mayor walked into the Dollar General Store and "walked past the victim waiting in the check-out lane."

The incident was captured on the store's surveillance camera.

"After a few words were exchanged, (Knight) attempted to knock the victim's cap off his head and then lightly slapped the victim on the cheek with his open hand."

The mayor appeared before Magistrate Rick Postalwait on April 22, and was fined $25 and $164.53 court costs.
