SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER MIKE WILSON RESIGNS - Stimulus Funds Due In May

(04/13/2009)
Calhoun County Board of Education member Mike Wilson submitted his resignation at last week's board meeting, effective June 30.

Wilson said his resignation comes because of moving into another county district, moving from Center to Lee District.

According to WV State Law, only two board members can serve from a district, and at the present time are being filled by Lee Evans and Joy Starcher.

Mr. Wilson said he would like to thank everyone who supported him during his endeavors over the past three years.

Superintendent Roger Propst told board members that stimulus funds awarded to Calhoun County Schools under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) should be received by early May.

Board president Cynthia Dale requested a report be given by CMHS Administration at the next regular board meeting regarding plans of action in reference to recent incidents of student possession and use of controlled substances.

"The community needs more information," Dale said, expressing concern that expulsion hearings have increased relating to this issue.

"Has consideration been given to bringing 5th graders back to the Elementary Schools?" Dale asked. Superintendent Propst responded that the administration has discussed the possibility.

There are currently 76 students in 5th grade with three teachers.

Mrs. Dale encouraged board members to research making the transition.

Propst told the board that Arnoldsburg Elementary School could not adequately house the summer programs.

He asked Carla Taylor, Director of School Improvement, that representatives from Energy Express and the principal of CMHS focus on a plan restricting programs access to classrooms at CMHS to a specific area so that the appropriate custodial work can be completed at the school over the summer.

Propst stated that he has no problem providing additional custodial staff if needed to complete the projects.

A special meeting to enter levies has been set fro April 21.

A preliminary budget meeting is scheduled for May 11.

A large number of personnel issues are listed under the agenda at   Calhoun Schools
