FIRE STRIKES SPENCER APARTMENT BUILDING AT MIDNIGHT

(04/04/2009)
12:01 A.M. - Fire broke out just before midnight at the Darrell Lowe Apartments on Ripley Road (US 33) just west of Spencer.

Several units of the Spencer-Roane VFD are responding to the building, located near the Grandview Motel.

First reports say flames are coming from the second story.

Firemen are unsure if a person or persons are entrapped on the second story of the building, waiting for breathing apparatus to make entry.

UPDATE 12:05 AM

A fireman is reporting the building is cleared of occupants.

SRVFD pumpers were on-scene very quickly, attacking fire in one or more rooms of the building.

Crews of firemen with breathing apparatus and hoses have entered the building.

UPDATE 12:35 AM

After bringing the fire under control, a second entry was being made related to the fire apparently spreading into a second story.

Following the knock-down, heavy billows of smoke are coming from the building, firemen renewed their attack.

UPDATE 12:45 AM

Firemen exited building, indicating fire has spread to second story and attic, indicating fire attack now from outside.

UPDATE 1:00 AM

Firemen using at least four water lines on structure, fire breaking through roof.

Fire being put out by huge volume of water.

Five different living units destroyed.
