OHIO DRUG FUGITIVE WORKED AT ARNOLDSBURG SCHOOL

A Minnora woman arrested last week by Kanawha County deputies was an Ohio fugitive related to drug and child endangerment charges, including the reported use of her 13-year-old daughter in selling drugs.

Rachel Ann Ferguson, 30, had briefly been at Arnoldsburg Elementary School as a janitor through a Department of Health and Human Services work placement, and was also a parent volunteer at the school, according to Calhoun School superintendent Roger Propst.

When police arrested Ferguson and her husband, Gary D. Ferguson, 42, they were accompanied by two daughters, ages 9 and 5, who were apparently students at the Arnoldsburg school.

Following the traffic stop, deputies ran the Fergusons through NCIC and discovered they were both wanted Ohio fugitives.

Child Protective Services responded to the scene and took custody of the children.

Arnoldsburg School principal Bryan Sterns said "Our school is a tight-knit community, certainly concerned about our students welfare. We are taken-back by this situation, and will be seeking further evaluation of outside placements to the school."

Ferguson had been at the school less than a month through the work placement.

"DHHR informs us they had not done a criminal background check on this lady," said superintendent Propst.

He said the school system does background checks on its employees, but historically has not done them in respect to such "volunteers."

Crimestoppers, a TV project, says the Corwin, Ohio couple deals drugs in front of their children and have had their 13-year-old make drug transactions.

The couple are in the South Central Regional Jail awaiting extradition.
