CALHOUN STILL HAS ELECTRIC OUTAGES FOLLOWING HIGH WINDS

(02/13/2009)
West Virginia's power companies are saying Wednesday's high winds caused the highest number of power outages in the state in at least 15 years.

Allegheney's web site said they received 45 calls from different locations without electric for Calhoun county's 4,662 customers.

Over 2,000 county customers were without electric last night, with the Thursday evening company report indicating 877 customers were still in the dark.

Appalachian Power and Allegheny Energy say 220,000 tri-state customers lost electricity, indicating Thursday afternoon power remains out to about 101,000 customers.

The Hur Herald observed winds reaching 50 mph on a gage, but other regional weather stations recorded wind gusts in excess of 75-miles-per-hour.

Governor Joe Manchin has authorized the use of National Guard troops to help clean up from the storms, if needed.
