SUICIDE BY POLICEMAN'S GUN - State Police are investigating an incident where a McDowell County man being processed on two unrelated charges grabbed a McDowell County sheriff's deputy's gun and fatally shot himself.

Twenty-nine-year-old Kevin Shirley of Roderfield was being processed at the McDowell County Sheriff's Department early Sunday morning when the shooting happened.

State Police say Shirley hit Deputy Michael Pertee in the face with a metal pole, then grabbed Pertee's service gun and shot himself.

Shirley had been arrested on charges of burglary and discharging a weapon within 500 feet of a residence.

CHARLESTON DRUG SHOOTING & BITING - Police in Charleston are continuing to investigate a shooting that happened early Monday morning, likely linked to drugs.

Police say the victim, 38-year-old Shawn Gilmore of St. Albans, was shot through the right elbow around 3 a.m. Monday. He took himself to the hospital.

Police say Gilmore admitted to buying some marijuana from a suspect, James Clark, arguing over the amount of money in the transaction.

Gilmore reportedly attempted to get his money back and they got into a fight.

Police say Gilmore bit Clark in the face and then Clark shot him in the arm.

FREE RIDE HOME - Kanawha County resident Daniel James told police that he was trying to get a free ride to his house in Charleston.

A man driving a black BMW picked up James and drove him to the intersection of Washington Street and Woodward Drive, when the driver of the car pulled out a gun and demanded all of his money.

James says he gave the man $400 and was forced out of the car.

No arrests have been made.
