GRANTSVILLE, W.Va. - Sandy Marshall and Erin Springston have been named 2008 Recycling Champions by the Recycling Coalition of West Virginia and the Calhoun County Solid Waste Authority for their efforts in recycling paper.

Marshall and Springston are employees at Calhoun Banks in Grantsville, and for the past three years have taken it upon themselves to ensure that all of the paper the bank shreds does not end up in the landfill but rather at the Cabot Recycling Station, operated by the Calhoun County SWA.

"The RCWV is proud to acknowledge these Recycling Champions who go above and beyond to reduce, reuse and recycle. We all benefit from their efforts, which provide for a better tomorrow," said Paul Hayes, chairman of the Recycling Coalition.

Tom Degen, executive director for the Calhoun County SWA, said the bank brings in more paper than anyone else in the county.

"I receive 20 bags of shredded paper twice a month from them," Degen said. "They bring it in by the pickup load."

The RCWV, in collaboration with local or regional solid waste authorities are honoring ten Recycling Champions who have reached beyond their normal responsibilities to contribute time and service to the recycling industry in the Mountain State. These individuals, groups and businesses provided significant recycling leadership across the state that improves the recycling community. Join us in acknowledging those who reach beyond their normal responsibilities to contribute time and service to our communities. Other Recycling Champions across West Virginia include:

Berkeley County Recycling Champion - Edgar Mason

Brooke County Recycling Champion - Follansbee Middle School

Lincoln County Recycling Champion - Howland Sharpe

Monongalia County Recycling Champion - PC Renewal

Nicholas County Recycling Champion - Evan Kjell Jorgensen

Putnam County Recycling Champion - Greg Sayre
