HOUSE REPUBLICANS VOTE UNANIMOUSLY AGAINST STIMULUS PACKAGE - Capito Says "Long On Promises"

(01/29/2009)
Republicans in the US House have stepped up to the plate claiming fiscal responsibility, voting unanimously against Barack Obama's $819 billion dollar stimulus package.

West Virginia Rep. Shelley Moore Capito voted with her Republican colleagues opposing the stimulus package that is aimed at reviving the nation's economy.

Her Democratic counterparts from West Virginia - U.S. Reps. Nick Rahall and Alan Mollohan - were among the 244 members of their party to vote for the bill. The vote was 244-188.

The Republican opposition comes after most of the party faithful voted in lock-step with Bush economic policies which has created the largest national deficit ever, most of them supporting free market principals without oversight that has led to the financial collapse of the American economy.

Echoing party sentiments, Capito said President Barack Obama's economic stimulus package was "long on promises and short on real results."

The measure now heads to the U.S. Senate.
