Coach Spencer Middle Wrestling There were ten school teams participating in the Spencer Middle School Invitational Wrestling Tournament, on Saturday Jan. 10 including Braxton, Calhoun, Hurricane, Independence, Parkersburg Catholic, Sissonville, Spencer, Trap Hill, Wahama, and Wirt. Trap Hill was the tournament champion with 29 points, Wirt placed 2nd with 28 points, Braxton finished 3rd with 26, and Wahama 4th with 23 points. Spencer tied with Independence for 5th with 12 points, and scored 22 pins. In 7th place was Calhoun with 8 points, Hurricane finished 8th with 6, Parkersburg Catholic placed 9th with 3, Hurricane-B finished 10th with 1 team point. Sissonville had no wrestlers advance out of the preliminary rounds. Individually, Spencer had 5 wrestlers who advanced to the finals: 1st Sam Lawson @ 171#, (5-0) w/ 5 pins; 2nd John Ash @ 145#, (4-1) w/ 3 pins; 3rd Eli Kennedy @ 155#, (4-1) w/ 4 pins; Caleb Starcher @ Hwt, (4-1) w/ 4 pins; 4th Mikeal Free @ 190#, (3-2) w/ 3 pins. Also participating were R.D. Monaghan @ 78# w/ 1 pin; Kenneth Kudrick @ 84#; Dillon Clarkson @ 90#; Josh Richards @ 95#; Preston Metzger @ 110#; Matt Starcher @ 116# w/ 1 pin; Joe Copley @ 123# w/ 1 pin; Sean Blosser @ 128#; Scotty Gibson @ 135#. Competing for the Spencer-B team were Tyler Lee, Caije Nichols, Doug Smith, and Tayler Lee. Pinning their opponents in all of their contested wins were R.D. Monaghan, Joe Copley, Eli Kennedy, Sam Lawson, Mikeal Free, & Caleb Starcher. On deck, Spencer Middle's next competition is Friday & Saturday Jan. 24th & 25th, at the WSAZ Invitational in Huntington, at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena.
